WHEN TO SEE AURORA
If you want to come to northern Sweden to watch the Aurora, when is the best chance for you?
SEASONAL TIMING
People often think that the winter is the best time, it’s actually possible to see the Aurora from mid August until May.
The equinoxes: The spring (March) and autumn (September) equinoxes are particularly favorable.
DAILY TIMING
The Aurora is visible after sunset. In August it is mostly seen around midnight, but in mid-winter (December and January) it can be seen before dinner, though it usually peaks around midnight. The darker the month, the more chance there is to see it.
Overcast skies are generally pretty poor for viewing the Aurora. Check local weather forecasts for clear nights. The best months are August, September and then February to April. In October to December there are often lots of clouds in the region.
The Aurora is not a constant phenomenon, as it comes and goes in waves. The solar wind charges up and releases the energy as Substorms that form stronger Aurora.
AWAY FROM LIGHT POLLUTION
To see the Aurora clearly, it’s best to be far away from city lights and other sources of light pollution. Rural and remote areas are also ideal if the Aurora is weak. When the Aurora is strong, however, it can be seen even in the middle of the city.
SOLAR ACTIVITY
Aurora activity often increases during the solar maximum, a period of high solar activity that occurs approximately every 11 years. The next solar maximum is expected around 2025. More solar activity does not always equal more Aurora; instead, it means more chances to see the Aurora.
KP Index: If you want the easy way, the KP index gives a very rough idea of the forecast and how intense the Aurora might be, but very often the reality differs. You can also use webcams to know where and how strong the Aurora is where you are.
